About Hostas


Hostas came from East Japan. The name Hosta was presented in 1812, by the Austrian botanicus Léopold Trattinick, thereby honouring Nicholas Thomas Host.  Hostas are lily- like plants, their flowers look like the flowers of lilies. At the moment there are approximately 40 types and more than 1000 cultivars.

Hosta's zijn afkomstig uit Oost-Japan. De geslachtsnaam Hosta is voorgesteld door de Oostenrijkse botanicus Léopold Trattinick, een eerbetoon aan de Oostenrijker Nicholas Thomas Host. Hosta's zijn lelie-achtige planten, hun bloemen lijken of de bloemen van lelies. Op het moment zijn er ongeveer 40 typen en meer dan 1000 cultivars.

The Hosta's are hardy plants. For a number of cultivars it takes 4 to 5 years before they are full-grown, in contrast to many other perennials which are already after 2 years full-grown.
The largest Hosta, hosta ' Krossa Regal ', reaches just after 7 years the adult state (width: 1.50 meter).

Hostas are excellent plants for shady places but some hostas will even grow in half or full sun, especially the plants with yellow or white leaves.

Hosta's zijn winterharde planten. Voor een aantal cultivars duurt het 4 tot 5 jaar tot ze volgroeid zijn. De grootste Hosta, Hosta Tokudama 'Krossa Regal' heeft na 7 jaar zijn volwassen omvang van 1,50 meter breedte bereikt.

Hosta's groeien heel goed in de schaduw, half of diepe schaduw. Hosta's met wit of geel blad kunnen ook in de zon.
